Engine Performance problem
2002 Mercury Cougar 6 cyl Front Wheel Drive 54,000 miles

Please help I've had my car in the shop 9 times and it continues to idle high when first started. Then when driven it looses power for a few seconds so that it jigs or chokes. Sometimes the car is sluggish and occasionally tries to stall when at a stop light. They continue to tell me its a fuel line problem. The tank has been cleaned the filter and fuel pump replaced. I had the spark plugs done and about 9 months ago an oxygen sensor which still shows lean. I'm at my wits end!

You may have a vacuum leak, get a can of spray gumout, spray the vac lines and maniflod area, when the idle changes, youve found the leak! You want the engine running and spray on the outside but do direct the stream onto the hoses, if it is a vacuum leak, the engine idle will change speed, then you have detected a leak, repair the vacuum leak and see how it runs! If that doesnt do it, you may need a new idle air control valve, it's bolted to the throttlebody
