2001 Mercury Cougar Idle Problems

Engine Mechanical problem
2001 Mercury Cougar 6 cyl Front Wheel Drive Automatic 132000 miles

When the car is in park it idles at around 300 to 400 rpm, spits and sputters, and tries to go dead. While driving it still sputters when you give it gas.The catyletic converter and oxygen sensors were replaced about a year ago. Could this problem be the fuel pump or filter? Its so bad now that we dont attempt to drive it.

Do you have a check engine light and when was the last tune-up?

Try cleaning out the idle air control valve and test the throttle position sensor's voltages to include a check on the PCV and EGR valves

Yes the light is on. It came on about a month ago when the problem first occured. I changed the oil, put injector cleaner in, filled up with premium, and reset the light. The problem didnt go away however the light stayed off for about a week before coming back on.

Sir, You need to have the computer scanned for OBD2 code/s you can go to Autozone and get read for free and then comeback with it, this is our starting point.
