1985 Mercedes Benz 300sd Two Wheel Drive Automatic 180000 miles

Car runs smooth on highway once warm, EGR replaced, oil fine, cooling fine, new exhaust problem still exists.
Makes popping noise in front under air cleaner until warm.
Performance and gas mileage same.
No oil leaks, white smoke out back, no exhaust backfiring, it sounds like something is not breathing properly engine shakes until warm, then
smooth. I am currently for last 2 months driving 1000 miles a week to work

Hi
When was your last valve adjustment? Quite possible that intake valve is being held open when cold then gains clerance when warm. And you saying white smoke from exhaust? And no coolant loss?
