2004 Mazda 6 Car gets stuck in Park

2004 Mazda 6 6 cyl Front Wheel Drive Automatic 100K miles

The car when cold will not allow me to just shift out of PARK. I have to hit the brake pedal and release in order to hear a click to get out of park. After I hear the click I can shift and once it is unlocked I can shift out of Park pretty much all day. Any advice on the cost of replacing that switch which sounds like it is under the dashboard?

Quite often it is the brake switch that is causing the problem. The next time the problem occurs, check if the brake lights are coming ON. Sometimes brake switches fails intermittently causing the interlock to stop working.
