Electrical problem
1999 Lincoln Town Car V8 Two Wheel Drive Automatic

The directional clicker noise comes on independently while you're driving, sporadically, one - two clicks to probably ten at a time and then it will be quiet for a long time. I replaced one bulb, the right fender marker light, checked the fuses and they're all OK. Does not affect the use of the directional which work fine, and lights do not go on as it clicks. Do I have a short? Have you ever experienced this before? Is it telling me something else is wrong? It's driving me nuts

I have never heard of such a thing. Does it happen when hitting the brakes?

I have noticed that the noise stops when you apply the brake fully and comes back as soon as you let up on the peddle.

Excellent. I think what you are hearing is the shift lock actuator energizing and deenergizing. This is most likely caused by a mis adjusted neutral safety switch. The shift interlock is activated by the brake light switch in park and neutral only, it should not be activated in drive, so what I think is happening is your neutral safety switch is out of adjustment so when your driving down the road in drive the switch sees neutral and thats why you are hearing the shift interlock switching. Hope this helps

Thank you. That sounds logical. I'm bringing it in for some servicing next week and will pass along the info to the tech. I'll let you know what happens.
