I just picked up my car from a mechanic who worked on the engine and transmission to stop oil and transmission fluid leaks that I had. He seems to have fixed that problem. However, when I started down the road, I noticed a noise (not sure if it is a rattle or fast clicking noise). It occurs when I take my foot off of the accelerator and seems to be coming from the engine area. As soon as I tap on the accelerator, the noise stops. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks. Will

Will:

It could be many things. Lets start with the easiest things first. You could have a catylatic converter that the insides have come loose or a loose heat shield.

Take a rubber mallot and tap on the exhaust system from under the car. See if you can duplicate the sound.

Let me know what you find.

Joe

Joe,

I tapped on the exhaust system, but didn't hear anything unusual.

Okay, can you tell me what seals he replaced on the transmission. Were they the axle seals?

He replaced the main seal. I don't know about the axle seals. Where are they located? Do they go by another name?

I'm not sure what is ment by the "main seal". There is an input seal from the engine to the trans and other than that, axle seals where the alxes from each front wheels attach to the transmission. Regardless, if he had to replace the input seal, chances are he removed the axles to access the trans unless he pulled the engine. My guess at this point (without being there) is that something didn't go back together correctly. Have you asked him / her to recheck their work because of the new problem?
