Hello,

This is actually a common issue with the Expeditions and F150s.
When you put the vehicle in park there is a switch that gets activated by the shift lever, which releases the key from the ignition. It's a safety mechanism, preventing the key to come out while not in park.
Sometimes that switch gets loose and when you put in part it does not engage it.

I have also attached the removal instructions for the console that you will have to remove to access the area.

Let me know if you have any questions.

Thank you.

Can this be repaired or worked around without replacing the gear shift mechanism?
Thanks for your help.

Some instances I have seen that you can simply put back the little switch back into the previous position and it will work. It will all depends on if the switch is intact or broken in your vehicle. You might have to take open up the console to have a look.
Let me know what you find.
