Jerks and sometimes it quits

Does the car have to be " hot " when checking for a code for a bad catalytic converter? The car is jerking sometimes and sometimes it just quits running, No codes are showing, but the jerks and the quit running are not at the same time.

Auto parts scans for free and no it does not have to be hot a scanner will pick the code up with key on only. also check fuel pressure with a gauge auto parts will rent it.
