Hi i have a 96 jeep grand cherokee with a v8 with about 119000 miles on it....last night i was on the highway when the temperature gage went off...i drove to the next exit and had the car towed home...took it to a repair shop where they replaced the lower radiater hose...however now it is running very rough and crappy...someone said my valve gaskets may have blown...does this sound right and if so how much am i looking at?

I'd have proper diagnostics ran on the vehicle. To diagnose valve seals being bad they have to do more testing than "it runs crappy".
Over heating can cause major damage, but don't get taken for a ride. Get wirtten estimates, and shop around. If they are all shooting very high, check a local junk yard to see what they would charge to swap an engine for you. You may walk away with an engine w only 30k miles on it for less than the fix of yours. they usually give a 30 day guarentee too.
