We own a 1996 JEEP Grand Cherokee Larado with 176,000. The engine is a straight six. I know the miles are up there but most of them literally are highway miles and mostly put on by us. Here is our problem.
I drove to my daughter's doctor appointment fine, stopped by the house to pick up my husband for lunch. When I pulled into the drive (on a slanted driveway), I turned the car off and ran inside to grab something. My husband went outside less than a minute later and started the car up fine. He then sat in the car for over 5 minutes with the engine idling while I took a phone call. When I got outside he put the car in Reverse and it died.
He tried to start the car back up and all it did was crank but not actually start. The lights on the dashboard lit up, so the battery is okay. We got out and checked the fuses. All okay. I cranked the car and pushed the accelerator to the floor to help clear out the fuel pump in case it was clogged and still the car will turn over but not catch. After turning the key several times without it actually catching, we stopped. All the electrical data in the dash (MPG, digital trip odometer, ect )seems to have been cleared and reset itself to zero (for instatance the clock reading is blinking.) When I put the keyin, but not turn it all the way, I hear a louder than normal humming sound, (maybe from the fuel pump?) We did add gas to the car, even though there was about 4 galloons in the tank already. So now there is about 5 gallons.
The car is great working order with no recent major problems. I was slightly shocked when the car stopped running.

Here is a list of the items repaired in the last year or so:
Feb 2007 Transmission rebuilt (less than 5,000 miles)
Jan 2007 new Tires & struts, shocks
Dec 2006 Starter
Nov 2006 Front brakes and rotors, calpiers
April 2006 Water Pump, Raditor, and all Brake pads
Catilact Converter, Muffler, Heat sheild, tune up w/spark plugs (25,000 miles ago), New Battery

All the oil changes, air filters and pcp values have all been changed on time.
I am at a lost of what it can be. Any suggestions?
Thanks!

Sounds like the fuel pump is failing-Do a fuel pressure check to finger the fuel pump

Sounds like the crankshaft position sensor. Check spark at plugs.
