PS fluid level normal

I live in FL and when the outside temps drop below 63 degrees, I start hearing noise from the van. It sounds like regular engine noise, only it gets louder and whines when I turn the steering wheel, making me suspect the power steering. If I drive it up north to REAL cold weather, the noise gets louder and louder still. The van runs fine and steering is not affected--yet--there is no stiffness or difficulty steering. Just loud noise.
Is this dangerous? Do I need a PS pump, or is it the rack?
The dealer says they have never heard of this---are they trying to avoid an expensive warrantee repair?
Thanks so much.

There is a service bulletin out (TSB 07-005) regarding power steering pumps. The symptoms sound quite a bit like what you are describing. The cause is assumed to be an internal problem with the power steering pump that contaminates the p/s fluid. It suggests replacing the pump. I would suggest taking a look at your power steering fluid to see if it looks contaminated. Look in the p/s fluid reservoir to see if it looks dark, comtaminated or discolored (it should be clear). If you are unsure, you could probably just take it down to the dealer and ask them.

I hope this helps and good luck.
