My daughter has a 1989 Honda CRX with about 170,000 miles. The motor has always ran quiet for such an old car. Recently it has started making this constant high pitch noise, almost like it is wound to tight. The car still runs good with no obivious problems. Any idea on where I should start to trouble shoot this problem. I.M the mom and also pay for the repairs and would rather do it myself if possible. Thanks in advance for your help.

I think if you take a look at the belt tension you will find that one of them is not properly set. You might want to think about replacement of the guilty belt.

What is a guilty belt? I've never heard that term before.

The guilty belt would be the one that is squeeling. It is not a special belt.

Now I really feel stupid. Guilty belt and all!
Since my original post the car has gone from squealing to a rough knocking noise. I guess whatever it iwas that sounded like it was wound to tight is now about to come loose. I'm thinking it is not a belt at this pointthey look firn) It's now shifting hard( It has an automatic transmission.) So back to the drawing board. Thanks for the input.
