I have a 2001 honda civic ex, coupe. It has been told that I should replace the timing belt. The car has 128000 miles and hasnt shown sign of braking down. I would like to have this car for a couple of more years. The way the mechanic determine the replacement was by viewing the exterior belts. I saw the exterior belts and they show some wear. Would this be indicative of the timing belt to be replaced? Also, how every often should the belt be changed?

The indication of the exterior belts is not bad. The car will have serious problems if the belt breaks while running. It is an "interference" system. The valves open when there is space or as the piston is coming up or going down. Should the belt break when a valve is open, which is a very good chance, the piston will hit it next time up. Now you need a head replacement. You plan to drive it, do it. I go about 100K on a belt, some go 80K or so. You do the math on which is the best way to go.
