1994 Honda Civic speedo and shift problem

I have a 94 Civic 175000 miles auto transmission. Occasionally the speedo
quits working for a brief period, and it occasionally
gets stuck in first gear for a brief period. The two
problems seem related, could it be the speed sensor?

Yup, the vehicle speed sensor will do you in with speedo and shifting problems.
