Ok, I was driving to work this morning when my battery light came on. About 10 minutes later my speedometer, tach, everything on my dash stopped working including my radio and my car started jerking when I accelerated. When I got to work I noticed my turn signals were dinging rapidly as if the bulb was burned out so I tried to turn on my headlights and the engine just cut out. I tried to start the car again and it won't turn over. I openned the hood to see if I could spot the problem and noticed some smoke coming from a wire that was plugged into the bottom of the engine along with the smell of burnt plastic. I'm hoping it'l be a simple fix where I just have to replace whatever wire that is (some kind of sensor I'm guessing) but I'm not sure. Anyone have any suggetions?

If you hadn't said smoke and burning plastic, i'd say altenator or altenator belt. Check the belt first, a wire would have kept burning. The belt tensioner went out on my van this week and did about the same thing!
