To shift the car from park you have to step on the brake. Last night I could not get the release button on the shifter to release when I stepped on the brake. After a few tries it released and I was able to shift out of park. I tried shifting out of park several times, when pressing on the brake. It would only shift out 1 out of 7-10 tries. Is this a mechanical or electrical problem and how hard is it to fix. Can you give an approximate cost to fix? Can I do it myself?
Thanks

Hi tomegibson,

The problem is most likely caused by a bad brake switch. When problem occurs, check if the brake lights are working.

The brake switch is listed at $ 35.97 for vehicles equipped with cruise control. Without cruise control is $ 17.97.

Labor time for replacement is 0.5 hours.

Replacing the switch is rather easy but the adjustment must be correct otherwise it could cause the brakes to lock up after driving for certain period of time.
