My 1998 honda EX has a idle problem this problem showed up suddley. I have had this car since it was new and all service has been by the book. After the engine is warmed up and the car is driven the idle is irratic above 1100 to 2000 rpms. When in N or park. When in drive or rev the idle is 1100. When you blimp the throdle the idle comes back to normal. If I keep the car in 1st and run the car up to 3000 rpm let off the accelerator the car idles normal if I do the same thing to 3500 or higher the car does the irratic idle. There was one point where the DTC 1129 code was set. MAP higher than expected. My snapon scan tool showed a 7.8 - 8.3 Hg which is ok by the service manual. I did replace the MAP anyway. The TPS shows a 9.8% at idle during the irratic and normal idle. I also replaced the PCV. I hear no vaccum sounds. This was all of a sudden and only happend after I let the gas level get low enough for the light to come on. (First time ever in its life.) Can you help?

Hi Tom,

Did you check if there is sufficient throttle cable free play? A cable that is not returning fully would cause the problem described.

Checked the cable free play. It was ok. Car does idle fine when you blimp the throttle. The TPS reading in like 9.8% under all conditions when at idle. I am thinking the IAC may be dirty or sticking.

Throttle at fully closed position should have aproximately 10 % so your reading is within specs.

Did you try adjusting the idle speed?

It is possible the IAC is sticking as you suspected. Remove the air intake hose and try covering the air intake port at bottom of throttle body to see if the IA is the cause. If yes, try spraying some carb cleaner into the port to clean and free up the sticking IAC.
