It starting surging between 1st and 2nd gear

It starting surging between 1st and 2nd gear and now a few days later has a shake to it all the time and a loud noise sometimes when pulling out from a stop or going up a hill. We replaced the O2 sensor, #1, and it is worse. We did not reset the computer. The check engine light has been on and off for some time now and the computer reads a "1". Are we repairing the right thing? We also replaced the fuel filter with no changes.

This is most likely a vacuum leak. So, we need to start with checking this and here is a guide that will help with this:

I am attaching the info on this DTC which is for an o2 sensor but basically it is telling you that it is getting a signal that it does not expect so it assumes the sensor is it the issue.

However, if you have a vacuum leak on this older vehicle then that will cause the ECM to think the o2 sensor is the issue. So, we need to start with making sure there is no vacuum leak.

Then we need to run through the actual testing for the code and see what comes up.
