My son has an 88 Honda Accord with 127k miles on it, 4 cylinder auto. Tonight he was driving to his girlfriend's when he saw a big plume of smoke, lost power, his gauges all freaked out, and finally the car died. Would this be a blown head gasket?

Probably not. Id check for a seized alternator.

You can remove the spark plugs and crank it over and see if coolant blows out of the plug holes

Thanks - we'll give it a shot.
We just put a new alternator on it about two months ago.
