My car has been overheating for about a month now and I've taken it to a shop. They have told me that I have a blown head gasket and that it is going to cost me $1300 to fix it. Is this a reasonable price to buy and replace a head gasket? For some reason that just seems like a lot more than necessary. Am I getting ripped off? (they are not fixing anything other than the head gasket and that is their price)

Hello,

The price sounds about right. Here were I live the cost is $1200 - $1500.
And if the vehicle is an over head cam and the water pump is run by the timing belt . Most places will replace the water pump and timing components also. It is just a good practice. Since it has to be torn down that far anyway. I won't do a head gasket on over head cam engines unless I change all the other parts listed. But, I would ask the person if they plan on replacing those parts and if that is included in the quote you were given.

Hi liladybug08,

On top of what obxautomedichad mentioned, you have to be prepared for more damages.

It the overheating had occured for quite some time, there is a possibility the block surface might need to be refaced as this is an aluminium block and tends to run out.
