BCM location and replacement?

If you want to know where it is located it is mounted on the drivers side kick panel. It is a box with three harnesses attached to it. If replaced, it must be done by a dealer since the module needs to be programmed for your vehicle. You cannot swap out a module for a used one since the VINs must match.

For some time my gas gauge has failed to operate, then I got a n error message saying "Highbeams Out". But they are not out. But the front turn signals do not work but the back signals do work. Now the windshield washer does not work.
My mechanic said he checked it out and it is the Body Control Module that is bad. He said that he had everything working for a while then it broke again. So he recommended I go to the dealer to get the BCM replaced and reprogrammed. I then called another mechanic and he said I had three separate problems and he didn't think the BCM was the problem at all.
Can a faulty BCM cause all of the symptoms I described and how likely is it that replacing the BCM will fix everything?
Thanks.
Casey

In my opinion, I'd treat it like separate problems. I couldn't find any info, where the bcm had any control over the turn signals or fuel level gage.

Hello My name is kody,

I was wondering how much a body control module for a 2002 chevy impala LS would cost. We tool it to the dealer ship and they never told us how much it would cost for that individual part. I am also a mechanic and I never had to replace one.

It's in the $300.00 dollar range, and you need to download the info from it and flash the new module, or there will be MANY steps to program it, if possible.

Computer problem
2002 Chevy Impala

Went to Autozone, got a new BCM, programmed to my vin, installed it. The car stereo and security system still locked up. Other items controlled by BCM are working. What can I do myself? Or do I have to go to dealership?

INTRODUCTION
During body control module (BCM) related service, the procedures below are designated to set-up the BCM correctly. Before you start, read these procedures carefully and completely.

SETUP NEW BODY CONTROL MODULE (BCM)

IMPORTANT:

The BCM will not function properly if the Setup New BCM procedure is not performed.
Make sure the battery is fully charged before performing the setup procedure.
Make sure all disconnected devices and connectors have been reconnected
Perform the Theft Deterrent Re-learn procedure after successfully finishing the Setup New BCM procedure. Refer to Programming Theft Deterrent System Components in Theft Deterrent. If the Theft Deterrent Re-learn procedure is not performed after a BCM replacement, the following conditions may occur:
The vehicle will not be protected against theft by the PASSLOCK system.
The engine will not crank nor start.
Connect a scan tool to the data link connector (DLC).
Turn the ignition switch ON.
Select Diagnostics and input all of the required data when prompted by the scan tool.
Select BODY CONTROL MODULE.
Select SPECIAL FUNCTIONS.
Select Setup New BCM.
Note, Input all of the required data when prompted by the scan tool.
Select Setup SDM Part Number in BCM, and follow the onscreen directions.
Select New VIN, and follow the onscreen directions.
Select Option Configuration, and follow the onscreen directions.
Select Point of Sale, and follow the onscreen directions.
Exit back to the SPECIAL FUNCTIONS menu.
When the BCM, VIN, Point of Sale and Option Configuration have been entered, proceed with Theft Deterrent Re-learn procedure.
If the scan tool displays UNABLE TO PROGRAM BCM, BCM IS SECURED, then the BCM must be replaced and this procedure must be repeated on a new BCM.
NOTE: After the above procedure has been completed, personalization of the BCM defaults to a default setting. Inform the customer that the personalization settings must be set again.

IMPORTANT: After programing, perform the following to avoid future misdiagnosis:

Turn the ignition OFF for 10 seconds.
Connect the scan tool to the data link connector.
Turn the ignition ON with the engine OFF.
Use the scan tool in order to retrieve History DTCs from all modules.
Clear all history DTCs

Turn ON the ignition, with the engine OFF.
Attempt to start the engine, then release the key to ON (vehicle will not start).
Observe the SECURITY telltale, after approximately 10 minutes the telltale will turn OFF.
Turn OFF the ignition, and wait 5 seconds.
Repeat steps 1 through 4 two more times for a total of 3 cycles/30 minutes (the vehicle is now ready to relearn the PASSLOCK Sensor Data Code and/or passwords on the next ignition switch transition from OFF to CRANK).
IMPORTANT: The vehicle learns the PASSLOCK Sensor Data Code and/or password on the next ignition switch transition from OFF to CRANK. You must turn the ignition OFF before attempting to start the vehicle.

Start the engine (the vehicle has now learned the PASSLOCK Sensor Data Code and/or password).
With a scan tool, clear any DTCs if needed (history DTCs will self clear after 100 ignition cycles).

First of all thank you so much for your donation.I posted how to set up the new bcm and how to relearn the pass lock sensor after replacing the bcm. Give that a try. If the set up wasn't done with a tech2 with the correct software the new bcm won't work correctly.

Thanks for the detailed directions, will be working on it. On another site when I was researching this problem, someone mentioned they got the part at Autozone and it comes programmed for his specific VIN. I thought this was great, but in talking to the Autozone sales, it wasn't really programmed. Back to basics. Thanks again for your help!

What does the body control module control do? More specifically, does it control anything that I should be worried about if I am going on a long trip?

The BCM has nothing to do with the power steering, I thought you were having a problem with the BCM. Post back if you need help.

Did you get a used bcm or a new one?You need to get a new one because the bcm stores the mileage in it and once the mileage is programed in it you cant change it to the mileage you had before you changed the bcm. Also the new bcm has to be programed with the correct calibration options mileage etc. Then the pass lock has to be learned so it will start. All the this is done by the dealer.

This car is in like new condition but the lights keep flickering. We have disconnected the battery and it will stop it for a little while but then it will repeat again. We took the car to a garage and they said it's the Body control module and the ignition switch? The garage has quoted us a price of nine hundred and eighty nine dollars to replace these two parts. We have not agreed to this yet as am not totally convinced this is the problem. Please advise as I am a college student and don't have a lot of money.

Well my first question is can you do this yourself? If you can then you can buy the switch new at a parts store and go to a salvage yard to buy the body control module. If you feel you can do this yourself then let me know and we can do some tests to check it yourself. Let me know what you would like to do. If you are not convinced that you can do it and don't trust the shop then go get a second opinion first. Get back to me.

Does a malfunctioning BCM also affect the traction control / ABS lights on the dash. My husband has cleaned the traction control sensors. He had replaced the hub assemblies on the front end about 2 years ago.

They have separate modules for the traction control and ABS. You should have the trouble code(s) pulled since the lights are on though, that will help pinpoint the culprit.
