Engine Performance problem
2000 GMC Sonoma 4 cyl Two Wheel Drive Automatic

After driving 35 miles on the freeway to work, when I got off I notice the tackometer jumping from 5 to 15000 RPM'S. I had no problems driving the freeway at 65 miles per hour at a steady 22 RPM'S while in cruise control. I don't notice any problems driving around town or short trips. Any advice you could give would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

As a owner of a GMC Sonoma I had the same problem with RPM's shooting upwards. I replaced the throttle control sensor. It runs about $25.00. It is round with a female plug adapter. The inside has a half moon female hole that fits on the throttle control shaft. What happens is the half moon over a period of time waddles out of shape. Hence, the throttle control sensor in layman terms is cheaply made. I replaced the same control unit twice within a 12 month period. Anyway, replacing the control should fix the RPM problem. Also, the Throttle control sensor is easy to replace. But, you will have to move the air canister out of the way to get to it. Good luck.
