Heater core?

I have an 89 camaro that I noticed recently has been spewing rusty water into the interior of the car. My husband & dad seem to agree its the heater core & I hear that the entire dash needs to be removed in order to fix this. My question: is it the heater core, & is it something my husband [an intermediate car repairman] could do at home or should I bite the bullet & pay $600+ to fix it?

and also, no air is coming out of my vents wether it be hot or cold, only the front defroster. I think this is a simple error made by my last mechanic, and suggestions on how I can remedy that?

Are you using actual water in the cooling system or is it coolant? If you are using coolant then is that what you are finding is leaking from the system or is it water? You may or may not have to remove the entire dash (been awhile since I've been in an 89 Camaro) but it is located behind the dash usually on the passenger side. If you get a flash light you may be able to see it by looking up the passenger side of the dash.

As far as I know my husband has just been running straight water & yes i'm sure its water, we were driving a few weeks ago and my husband got hot rusty water all over the leg of his pants.

I'm going to crawl under the passenger dash & see if I can find the core, is it fairly obvious? Or could I easily mistake it for something else?
