My Mom has a 94 GMC Jimmy with over 200,000 miles. Lately she has had problems starting her engine. It will crank but not start. After awhile it will start and run fine.

I spoke with a mechanic who indicated the check valve on the fuel pump is a common problem with this vehicle. After reading through the forums, it looks like the fuel pump is indeed a likely suspect.

My question is. Do I need to replace only the pump and strainer or should I also replace the sender assembly as well. Where is the check valve actually located? Thanks!

Considering the fuel pump is an expensive repair I would get it checked out 1st. Sounds like the fuel pressure is bleeding down when shut off or not enough initial pressure when 1st started. Now this can most definitely be the pump causing either of these, but it could also be the fuel injector assy. Under the intake plenum. Tests can be performed to determine which is bad.

As for the sender. If the pump is bad be prepared to change the sender as well. On these particular models the lines to the sender tend to rust to the point they won't come apart.
