When start the truck it idles fine for a few seconds then lags (kind of dies) and then races to gain back idle. After this it runs a little rough. When i press the gas it returns to a smooth run but when i let off it returns to a rough idle. Replaced fuel pump after a year long sit and not running. Any ideas?

EGR valve stuck open with a chunk of carbon will do this.

There is an item called a Kleen Screen that you can get to stop it from happening again.
Basically you disconnect the wiring, then remove the two nuts holding it to the front of the manifold. Then clean it out well.

Now get a can of either GM top cylinder cleaner or Sea Foam cleaner. Follow the directions on the can to clean out the carbon from the engine.
Once your done, pull the EGR and clean it again, then install the screen.
