I was told I needs to replace the power steering rack and pinion. I don't have the money right now, so what is the worse that would happen if I still drive it.

Generally the rack goes bad, excessive clearence causing excessive play.

This would cause the steering to be loose.

Worst case would be a rack tooth break and loss of steering.

But is depends on what is wrong, rack, pinion, or inner tie rod, case leaking. In any case, I would repair ASAP, and not drive on freeway or at any speed above 40.
