Gas gauge jumps up halfway and falls back down again

So I bought this car after it sat about six years. Everything works, but the gas gauge does not. Weird thing about it is that when I turn the key, it jumps up about halfway and falls back down. Any ideas?

Scan for codes first then a mechanic will have to test the rest of system. He needs to put a special tool on PCM harness to test it.

Then you'll have to take to a mechanic so h e can test it by varying resistance to fuel gauge.
