: on a 1979 ford 302 motor it is in a 1950 f-1 truck, it had a bad crank, I replace it, new timmimg gears@chain, now when I start it up it is idleing at 2000rpm.I turn the distributor clock way all the way as I can go, it help some but it makes it hard to start. Do you think that I am a tooth off in the roter to fast or to slow. Any help would be thankful. Mark.

Try turning you ideling screw that changes your idel up or down. The only thing your distributer does is determining your starting possition.

The idle screws are back off.I had a person tell me that the timming is off becouse it is heating up very fast. Not more than 1min of this and it is very hot. They told me to check TDS to remove all plugs, turn the motor over by hand and put a 1 4 in spacer in #1cyl valve arm and turn it over until it touchs the valve and mark the bal then turn it the other way until it hits and mark it. Then measure between the two manks, that should get me close. Thank you very much for the reply. Papa.
