After I drive my car for a distance, when I put the car in park, the engine races like the idle is stuck. This doesnt' happen all the time, but when I travel long distance it seems to happpen more.

i thought i replied to this question before? oh well, my grandaughter is experiencing the same thing and i suspect the gas pedal CABLE is sticking. for her it is an on and off thing but so far but it's the only thing that makes sense. every other possible cause is rather exotic? i noticed in the ownership of several OLD tempos that the pedal was usually hard to press! hers included! replace or lube would be the thing to do!

another likely possibility is your cruise control is sticking/staying on. many tempos had cruise control which has a similar cable as the gas pedal hooked to the same throttle mechanism. i remember i had a van that was not going off cruise so i just disconnected it.
