Engine Performance problem
1992 Ford Tempo Front Wheel Drive Automatic 112000 miles

just bougth car today, drove it to the dmv, everything was fine. Got plate and drove home. Son started car and played radio. Car idled fine. Went to take wife to store. When driving to the store, motor started to race and response time was sluggish. Sounded like it didn't want to shift, then engine started running hot. Checked fluid levels at the store add one quart of oil. Same problem on the way home speedometer stopped working smelled something like oilburning or something.

Here's a guess.A vacuum hose has dislodged/cracked/failed. It could likely be the 1 on your MAP sensor?I am not that familiar with the v6 engine. But his particular failure would cause a lean mixture and a racing engine at the same time? This would explain poor response(lean mixture)overheat(lean mixture)and smell(burning oil) due to overheat!Check all your hoses/lines?I had a v6 chevy lumina that had about the same problem minus the overheat and it was vacuum hoses!Rotted and cracked!Had bought and driven vehicle for about a month!
