My mechanic has found that the gasket in the oil pan is leaking very badly. He said he has to drop the engine to change the pan gasket and it will take a full day and maybe $1000.00

I have never heard of this before.

In 1984 ford did not seem to care about access to things that fail, like the water pump, spark plugs, and you guessed it--the oil pan gasket. The transmission, drive axles, and the motor are just about all one unit. When something like an oil pan gasket fails -- believe it or not -- it is easier and LESS time consuming to just pull the motor and transmission to access the pan gasket. It may be $1000 depending on the condition of all the parts that must be removed in-order to remove the engine. If you are willing to spend $1000 on just an oil pan gasket I suggest putting a new rebuilt motor in the car for around $400 or $500 more.
