Will not engage

Though it was cv joints jerking during acceleration but then I parked it for a while. About half an hour. Got in, started it up and there was a grinding noise for about 10 seconds then it stopped. When I tride to put it in gear it would not engage in any gear and there were no unusual noises at this time. Can you tell me exactly what part would cause this? Thank you very much for your help.
