Power steering noise

1998 Ford Ranger XLT 4.0L V6. 140,000 miles. The Power steering makes a constant motor noise. It gets louder when you turn the steering wheel. I do not know much about working on vehicles. I would just know some things to look at before I take it to a mechanic.

Make sure the steering fluid reservoir is not low. If it is, look for leaks and fill it up. You may need a new pump or a high/low pressure hose.
