My 1994 Ford Ranger, 2.3L 5spd man 4X4 85,000 miles will idle high, 5000 - 6000 rpms, at times while driving, coasting and while not moving at all. I tried pulling up on the gas pedal when this happens, reving the engine and neither helps.

Air in the cooling system can cause a surging of the engine. Check the intake manifold or manifold gasket for a leak that adds extra air to the system and confuses the computer.
