Ford Ranger XLT hesitates to go when in gear

After warming up my truck Ford Ranger XLT, I place it in gear, and it hesitates for a long time before actually moving. This occurs in reverse and in drive.
I will be at a red light, and when it turns green, I give it gas and it just sits there, I can hear the engine revving, and after a while approx 10 seconds, it kicks in and actually goes. Why is that? And what can I do to fix it?

What year is this truck? Have someone or the local auto parts store scan it for you, sometimes codes will be there and not set the light, trans codes are common for that.

Have you checked the transmission fluid level in the truck. If it is very low, this could be a result. It does sound as if the transmission is going to be the problem. Hopefully adding fluid will fix it.
