2003 Ford Ranger won't start

Wife came out of walmart, started up, drove down parking lot to pickup garden supplies. When she tried to start again, the engine started, ran really rough, like it was running backwards then quit. Now won.T start, spins but is really rough like it is out of time with no attempt to fire.

Check for fuel pressure
suspect fuel pump
check compression
