1999 Ford Ranger power steering

1999 Ford Ranger 4 cyl Two Wheel Drive Automatic

when I got home from work I smelled something under the hood so I poped the hood and found that my power seering pump exploded power steering fluid all over my engine threw the pressure release valve I took the cap off and found that the fluid was black and sludge like so I flushed my fluid and put new power steering fluid in but when I turn the car on now and turn the wheel it shakes and rattles I dont know if its my pump or rack and pinion where do I start I dont want to buy them boath and install boath if I dont need to?

Sounds like you need a new power steering pump.

With the truck off and the front wheels jacked up off the ground, turn the wheel both directions. If it turns without a problem, it is likely just your pump. A mess up pump could be giiving you those symptoms.

Theres just probably air in the lines. If it doesnt clear up ina week then there might be a problem.
