When I start the engine, particularly on cold mornings after a night of 20degrees, there is a knock in the engine that lasts 2-3 sconds, then goes away. The engine has been well maintained, with oil changes at 5,000 mile intervals.
Please tell me its not the valves! What could be the possible causes? Thanks for your help.

Sounds like it may be the bottom of the engine not getting oil right away. Since this only happens in the cold, try using a lighter weight of oil, like maybe a 5w-20 or something like that, designed to circulate faster in cold weather. Higher weights like 10w-40 are better for hot weather when temps are up and you want a slightly thicker oil. Also be sure you are using the correct, high quality filter
