1997 Ford Ranger XLT auto trans linkage adjustment

I have a 1997 Ford Ranger XLT 2wd, with a 2.3L engine and 184000 miles on it. When I put the shifter into Drive, it shows on the gage that it is in 2nd gear,when I put it into neutral, it shows that it is in Drive, when I put it into reverse, it shows that it is in Neutral, etc. How do I adjust the linkage so that it shows it to be in the correct gear?

Remove the plastic panel directly below the steering column.You will see the cable that goes from the indicator to the shifter, there should be a small wheel on it that you can make the adjustment with
