1997 Ford Ranger wheel bearing

1997 Ford Ranger 6 cyl Four Wheel Drive Automatic

the front left wheel bearing is making a grinding sound. So I was wondering what tool do I need to change it? I have all the basic wrenchs and sochets up to 7/8. Do I need any thing special? And if the bearing breaks breaks will the wheel fall off? Thanks

Yes, if the bearing seizes up and breaks apart during operation than the wheel can fall off. Although it takes a LOT of abuse even to a bad wheel bearing for that to happen. Do you have automatic or manual locking hubs?
