We bought this car for our daughter. The first week she drove it the transmission went out in it. We had it replaced. The car seems to make a thump when put into gear and the engine rocks from front to back. The dealer says that is typical of small cars with front wheel drive and side mounted motors with a flex pipe. ( I believe this is how he explained it.)
is this true? I never heard of such a thing, but I'm not a mechanic either.
I thought maybe the guy who installed the new transmission forgot to tighten something. There seems to be a bolt missing near the engine. Could this be it? The dealer is really a decent guy and has done right by us with this car as far as putting in a used transmission. He said he drove it after the new transmissionwas installed and it runs great.

No this is not true for any car naturaly. I would say you either have a bad engine or trany mount or possibly a bad front axle.

So you're saying that there is no reason why the engine would move back and forth when shifting or running, correct? Because my neighbor looked under the hood while I was in the car, one foot on the brake the other foot on the gas with car in reverse then in drive and the engine was moving back and forth. My husband, in Iraq says get rid of it, trade it up for something else.

I said that it is not normal for it to do that. I would check the engine and transmission mounts to see if one is bad as that would be the only reason it would do that.
