Shorted the battery with a wrench

While tinkering under the hood of my 1986 E350 chassis mo-ho, I dropped a wrench and it landed dead on the backup system battery terminals. It was just there a moment, but inside, everything seems to be dead.
Could I have damaged something seriously, or could it just be a fusible link or something like that
BTW it was NOT running at the time.
Thanx for any help.

Mostly what happens is battery life shortens but id get a fusible link, cause they are the first to go, before anything major.
