2004 Ford F-150 four wheel drive

The four wheel drive in my truck has not been engaged for some time and now its hard to get into fourwheel drive and when you do it grinds when you drive down the road. What do I check and how?

Can you tell where the sound is coming from? Is it under the truck or in the front?

The grinding comes from under the truck

Chances are it is coming from the transfer case. If I had to guess, I would say the actuator is going bad and not fully shifting. Remove it and check it for function.
