I have an older F150 pickup; 225K miles. Has performed admirably through the years; very little major repairs. Was driving 2 days ago, and when I slowed down the truck shook violently. The slower I got, the more it shook. When I came to a stop sign, the engine killed. It did restart, with difficulty. Idle is very rough; if truck is in gear it tends to kill. Had it towed to mechanic, where I am waiting for the news. Quick scanner placed on vehicle shower misfires on Cylinders 3 and 6. No oil, tranmission fluid, or antifreeze leaks.
Ideas?

Engine running rough or misfiring can be cause by the following:

1. Defective spark plug
2. Inadequate spark/coil, defective spark plug wire.
3. Lack of compression
4. False air leakage.
5. Faulty fuel injectors.
6. Insufficient fuel pressure.
7. Contaminated fuel.
8. EGR valve that is leaking.
9. Oxygen sensors.
10. Throttle position sensor.
11. Idle air control valve.

Misfire on 3 and 6 indicates a repeated misfire, usually a coil. When was the last time plugs were replaced? If your doing this your self, dont confuse the engine order with a chevy. Fords mark there cylinders starting on the passenger side- 1, 2, 3, 4 and driver side 5, 6, 7, 8 lower # towards the front. Your coils will require a 7mm socket to remove, and can get pretty crowded. If you have patience, this is a job that you can tackle at home. Coils run around 80$ each, and 90% of the time thats the problem on a ford.
