2000 Ford Explorer XLT
Ok, so I just bought this truck less than a month ago. It idles funny. Sometimes too high, sometimes too low, sometimes alternates between the tow. Pretty much always does this with just the varying as above stated. Also, yesterday my check engine light came on. My fuel cap is on all the way... The manual says it could be water in the gas etc. What should I do about this without paying someone to plug a little computer into it? It's given me no problems and no difference in driving since the light came on... Not a blinking check engine light, just a steady light. No other problems but I'm not real sure about this truck as I'm used to working on small cars like Hondas, Toyotas, etc.
Please let me know what you think... I'm too pregnant to get under there but I could relay the answer :)

With the idle going up and down I bet the MIL is on because the 02 sensors are trying to ajust to the mixture...check for vacuum leaks...get a can of spray gumout and spray around the manifold and vac lines, if the idle changes, you found a leak. if you have a 4.0 check the manifold itself, is it black plastic type? If yes the gasket in the middle of the two halfs may be NG!
