If the smoke is coming out of the exhaust, then you have an internal oil leak. This would be related to the rings. The smoke could be coming off the engine with a good leak from the valve cover. Is the valve cover leak pretty severe? How about the compression of the engine, etc. How many miles on the engine?

Sounds like the blower motor resistor, it should be mounted somewhere near the blower motor in the heat/ a/c housing. It should have 2 screws holding it in, pull it out and if the coils are burned up thats your problem.
