I replaced a alternator on a 1995 ford explorer about 149,000 miles, and now the gauge is working fine but the battery light is on and wont go off.

If the alternator is working properly, then make sure you connected all the wires or did not damage any wires after replacing the alternator. This is a fairly simply circuit that operates the Battery light. It starts at a fuse( Check this also) then goes to the battery light and ends at the alternator. Hope this helps
