I hear a whirling/whistling sound while I step on the gas to accelerate. It continues for a while when I let the pedal go. But as soon as I accelerate again, I hear the noise again. What is the problem.

I have the same problem in my 96 explorer with a 4.0. Usually it means I need to clean my air filter.I clean it and the problem goes away for a couple thousand miles.(5-10, 000)

I had the same thing on my '02 Explorer (V8). It was more of a "buzzing" sound though (only upon acceleration). As soon as I brought it to the Dealer and explained the annoying noise, they knew right away what I was talking about. It turned out to be the speedometer cable. They sometimes can reseat it, and the noise goes away. More often than not, they replace the entire cable to cure it for sure. The Service Advisor told me they had replace about 50 cables already since '02.
