I just bought this 1999 Ford Explorer from a small dealer here in town. It started running rough the other day at idle, then out of nowhere it died. It started right back up, and I've had no problems since (the MIL never came on though). However, I noticed that the MIL never comes on when I switch the key to the "run" position or when I start it either, and never proves out. I checked the OBD2 fuse, the warning lamp fuse, and the cluster warning lamp fuse under the hood, and they're intact. Maybe they took the check engine bulb out of the cluster? I can't think of anything else to check.

Yes, I have seen some low life dealerships (they are the biggest in my city) who sold vehicles with the MIL bulb pulled out. Pull out your gauge cluster and physically check the bulb. If there is a bulb there, replace it with a known good bulb.

Thanks for confirming Zackman. I'd probably never be able to prove that's what they did, but I need to know so I guess I'll be pulling the cluster. I check all vehicles I buy very closely, but usually no light=no problems as far as OBD2 goes, so I didn't notice. Ugh.

Yeah. Just check the bulb, and just to be on the safe side, go to your local Autozone and ask them to scan the computer. They still do that for free.
