1996 Ford Explorer torque converter

Transmission problem
1996 Ford Explorer 6 cyl Four Wheel Drive Automatic

I try to shift the vehicle into drive but it acts as if its in park or neutral. I was thinking the torque converter but im not sure. Anyone have any ideas?

IT could be many things that cause this, low fluid, torque converter, front pump, valve body... Has the check engine light come on?

Joe,
Yes the check engine light comes on and also the vehicle would shudder. It doesnt do this anymore since it broke down on me. Now I try to put it into gear and it does nothing. I tried to read the codes but they were erased when i broke down because my cables gunked up on me so i had to disconnect the battery and clean it up. :(

The shuddering makes me believe the clutches were starting to slip. As far as the check engine light, that could have told us if there where the problem was coming from. At this point, I hate to say it, but it needs to be inspected by a trans mechanic that has the proper test equipment to check things like shift solenoids, TCM...

I'm sorry. I wish I had a better response for you, but without the trouble code, it becomes a guessing game for me.
